Commentary from the Principal Secretary Jeffrey H. Luhanga, PhD
Enhancing collaboration and information sharing between the MoAFS, other government departments, development partners, civil society and the private sector .
This website has been produced as part of the efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MoAFS) to improve the flow of information amongst the stakeholders that are working to improve agriculture and food security in the country. The site contains a number of key documents and important pieces of information relating to agriculture food and nutrition security.
The MoAFS, through its Food and Nutrition Security Joint Task Force /Technical Secretariat (FNSJTF/TS), created this easy to use website in 2009 so that stakeholders could have up-to-date access to the latest data, documents and policies.
The website also contains databases, news of recent events in the Agriculture and Food Security Sector and information about upcoming events. In this way we have been able to improve information flow and make collaboration in the sector work better.
Like all websites, this one has been evolving in both form and content. The Ministry has been listening to its stakeholders who have made suggestions for improvement. In 2010 the website contributed to the MoAFS winning the Institute of Southern Africa (Misa)-Malawi Chapter, award as the most open and transparent government institution, receiving the Golden Key Award. MISA were looking at 10 government institutions and to come first among the 10 examined was not a small achievement. The MoAFS however does not see the award as a reason for complacency, rather it is viewed as a reason for re-doubling our efforts to share information and improve communication with farmers, NGOs, development partners and the private sector.
The website is NOT an on-line store of every piece of agricultural information (or report) produced in Malawi since 1964. We are striving to create an accessible source of up-to-date information. The Archive has just few documents, if you are looking for some information write to the website and they will check and see if it is available and if it is they will email it to you. Some documents are very large in electronic form, the Malawi Growth and Development Strategy (MGDS) report for example, and these will also need to be emailed to you, as having them uploaded and downloaded from the website will disrupt the smooth functioning of the site itself.
Lastly the website is striving to keep stakeholders informed about what all the actors in the Agriculture and Food Security sector are doing, and not just what the Ministry itself is doing. It is therefore incumbent on all stakeholders to show willingness in sending information to the website so that it can really fulfill its function.
I hope you find the information and format helpful. Should you have questions do not hesitate to contact the Ministry at the address below, as we welcome constructive comments that help us continually improve.
